How are we approaching the JAR in Devon?
Self Assessment

The local authorities director of children’s services has been asked to coordinate the completion of a self-assessment with key partners covering relevant local services.
This is the area of greatest significance of the JAR and will focus, by agreement, on those key judgements which are of particular significance to the local area either because they are local priorities or because performance data and inspection evidence show relative weaknesses.
The self-assessment will allow the services in the local area to make their own analysis of key indicators, and of the views of service users, in particular children and young people. It will allow them to assess activities to demonstrate the effectiveness with which they have worked together, how far priorities have been implemented and to evaluate the extent to which the actions taken have improved outcomes for children and young people in Devon.
Members of the review team will use self-assessment to:
- gain information on services and provision and on local priorities for improvement
- deploy inspection resources and selecting areas for additional fieldwork
- follow up issues in fieldwork
- confirm judgements in areas where no fieldwork is taking place
- provide evidence of the quality of management and capacity to improve.
